*This is part of our design series on* [*How to make an OC!*](https://blog.unvale.io/how-to-make-an-oc/) *– the ultimate guide to character building.*

Whether you’re suffering from art block, interested in trying a new art style, or struggling to draw certain things, free character creators and templates are here to help. You can use them to design a simple image or create a 3D model to act as a reference for commissions, test out design concepts for your next OC, or just have fun creating new characters.

Once you try using these character creator websites, apps and games, upload what you’ve created to [Unvale](http://unvale.io/?ref=blog.unvale.io), [with proper credit of course](https://help.unvale.io/en/articles/8927101-uploading-art-you-didn-t-draw-yourself?ref=blog.unvale.io). You can also attach a hashtag to your uploaded images to make them easier to find by other Unvale users.

## 1\. Picrew

If you’ve been on Unvale, you’ve likely seen an OC created on [Picrew](https://picrew.me/en/?ref=blog.unvale.io). Picrew is a character creator website with thousands of options to find the perfect art style for designing your next OC – for free! Each individual Picrew functions like a dress-up game where you can select anything from a character’s hair style, eye colour, and even outfits and accessories. It’s a reliable way to design a reference for commissions or a simple stand-in for an OC until you’ve drawn them. We even have a dedicated guide for [how to use Picrew and Gacha Life](https://blog.unvale.io/picrew-and-gacha-life-giving-your-oc-a-free-face/) (our next entry).

## 2\. Gacha Life 2

If you’re a fan of anime-style chibis, Gacha Life 2 might just be for you. Whether you’re on mobile or PC, you can download it through [iOS](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/gacha-life-2/id6468838207?ref=blog.unvale.io) or [Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.lunime.gachalife2&hl=en%5FUS&ref=blog.unvale.io) and play for free. Gacha Life 2 has a massive variety of customization and poses to choose from and is super popular on Unvale; you can see what customization options and possible characters you can create with [#gachalife2](https://unvale.io/search?q=&ref=blog.unvale.io#GachaLife2). You can create mermaids, angels, demons and whatever else you can dream up.

## 3\. Heroforge

While this site is actually for designing tabletop miniatures for role playing games like *Dungeons & Dragons*, [Heroforge](https://www.heroforge.com/?ref=blog.unvale.io) is also a convenient tool for creating 3D models of your OCs. Heroforge’s options span more than just humans; there are anthropomorphic animals and even giant spiders you can customize and color on the site. It boasts a large variety of options for designing your OC’s facial features, poses, and outfits, and is easy to work with even for first time users. A perk of Heroforge is being able to rotate and zoom on your model’s face and clothes so you can take screenshots of your OC for references and to show off to your friends.

It also features a built-in character sheet for *Dungeons & Dragons* 5th edition (2014) to use for your OCs, whether they’re currently in a campaign or not. Reroll has a free demo feature that grants you access to some of its character creation options and one character sheet slot. If you enjoy the app and plan to use it for your gaming sessions, you can purchase complete access with a one-time payment. This gives you access to more character slots and more customization options.

## 5\. Clangen

If you’re a fan of the *Warriors*, [Clangen](https://clangen.io/?ref=blog.unvale.io) is made for you. This downloadable game is a life simulator inspired by the *Warriors* series of novels with randomly generated, pixelated cats. Unfortunately, this means you can’t necessarily customize and create your real life feline best bud. But the simulation gameplay can help you create and develop your OCs. Unvale has plenty of examples of character created on Clangen, which you can find with [#ClanGen](https://unvale.io/search?q=&ref=blog.unvale.io#clangen).

## 6\. Dragon Builder

Hosted on the website [MonsterBrainSoup](https://www.monsterbrainsoup.com/dragon-builder/?ref=blog.unvale.io), this dragon builder lets you design your own unique dragon on a side-profile template. Choose from a variety of scales, fur and feathers and assign each part any color you’d like. Independently customize your dragon’s head, torso, legs, wings and tail and add accessories like scarves and saddle bags. The site even has a randomizer and preset designs to help spark your inspiration, along with a dark mode for late night designing.

## 7\. VRoid Studio

Ever wanted to try 3D modeling? [VRoid Studio](https://vroid.com/en/studio?ref=blog.unvale.io) is an anime style character creator with presets and sliders for easy use. You can even draw digitally using a stylus to edit your 3D model’s clothes, hair and more. Besides being able to create and share your original characters through VRoid Studio, you can also transfer your 3D models into programs like Blender and animate them.

## 8\. Meiker.io

Featuring a vast variety of character makers, [Meiker.io](http://meiker.io/?ref=blog.unvale.io) is a free to use website similar to Picrew. The art styles range from anime, western style cartoons, and even popular games like *Animal Crossin*g. You can even create your own character maker just by uploading image files. If you do, make sure to share your character maker with other Unvale users! If you use Meiker for your own OCs, make sure to link the maker or the artist in the artist section when you upload on Unvale.

## 9\. Charat.me

[Charat.me](http://charat.me/?ref=blog.unvale.io) is a Japanese character maker with a simple, streamlined creation process. The site features both headshot style makers and full body makers in a charming anime style. The game has pixel art style horses in the style of My Little Pony and an island to explore and build on. While it’s mainly a Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) social game, you can fully customize and create a variety of colourful ponies and stick to yourself with single player options. Of course, [keep internet safety in mind at all times](https://help.unvale.io/en/articles/8927129-online-user-safety?ref=blog.unvale.io) if you choose to use the social features. If you’re curious about the artstyle and possibilities, check out [#PonyTown](https://unvale.io/search?q=&ref=blog.unvale.io#ponytown) on Unvale and find other creators to play with.

## 11\. Life Makeover

[Life Makeover](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2626940/Life%5FMakeover/?ref=blog.unvale.io) is a free-to-download dress-up game you can find on Steam. Design your character in a 3D anime style down to the very last detail. You can even decorate a dream home for your character. Just a warning: this game features in-game purchases and a gacha system, meaning you may have to spend in-game currency to randomly collect the outfits and items you want. If you would rather stay away from gacha games, this may be one to skip.

## 12\. Avataaars Generator

[Avataaars Generator](https://getavataaars.com/?ref=blog.unvale.io) is one of the most user friendly avatar creators on this list. The generator can be used by both younger and older family members who might not be familiar with character creators, but still want to make their own avatar. If you envision your character a realistic setting and you don’t need to depict them in a complex style, Avataaars Generator is the perfect fit.
