Learn how to use Picrews and Gacha Life along with how to properly credit them!

Not everyone is an artist, and not everyone has ample free time! Having dedicated images of your OCs made by yourself or other artists isn’t accessible to some users. That’s okay! Two ways to navigate around this issue are Picrew and Gacha Life. In this blog, we’re going to teach you how to access these resources and how to credit them properly. These are great alternatives to generative AI, which is never allowed on Unvale. Every OC deserves a face and with proper credit and linkage, every OC can!

How to Use Picrew:

Picrew is a website where artists can make character creators! This allows users of the site to make images of themselves or their characters, with each image creator having different “scope of use” rules and guidelines. Clear as mud? That’s okay, I’ll break it down for you!

There are four different “scopes” for use:

  • Personal: Users may use the image within the scope of Non-Commercial and Personal Use (Without exceeding the scope of Non-Commercial Use)
    • TLDR: Can be used for profile pics, headers, personal websites/blogs, and OC pages on Unvale!
  • Processing: Users may process images by changing color, adding lines, etc...
    • TLDR: You can edit/draw on the finished image as much as you’d like!
  • Commercial: Users may use the image for commercial purposes, including websites and printed materials. However, the image shall not be used as the main image.
    • TLDR: Can be used for branding purposes / selling stuff but may not be your main OC image.
  • Non-Commercial: Users may use the image for Non-Commercial purposes, as well as for personal use. However, even if it is for Non-Commercial use, you may not use the image as the main image.
    • TLDR: Don’t use it to sell anything or as your main OC image.

Oftentimes, artists will also put additional permissions in the description of the image creator. Make sure that you are using an image creator that will allow you to post on Unvale without breaching the artist’s terms. Picrews labelled as personal and processing can be used as main images on Unvale. Commercial / Non-Commercial may be used but not as the main image.

Each time you use a Picrew, a link to the image creator and/or credit to the artist that made it must be given or the image could be taken down. After you finish an image on the site, you can scroll down to find a block of credit that you can copy. That works just fine!

On Unvale you can find thousands of examples and Picrew credits on our Explore Page!

How to Use Gacha Life:

Gacha Life is a fairly well-known app where you can customize and dress-up characters! Super fans online will use the app as a starting point and draw on top of it or add rendering/details/additional accessories. It’s downloadable as an app on iOs, Android, and Google Play!

I’m quite new to the program, but I will definitely be trying it out more and learning more of the niche things that users have discovered! Something that really impressed me were the options in terms of color, hair, accessories, etc. Plus, with the option to draw on top of this image and make it all my own, I’m sure there’s a lot more room for unique character design.

If you upload an image to Unvale that was made in Gacha Life, remember to put that in the description of your character, world, or writing!

Alright my lovelies! Remember: there are alternatives to using AI to create art, which is slimy and nasty and gross. These are artist-made programs by real humans who want you to use them, just remember to give credit where it is due! Hopefully, for those of you without the time and resources to create art, you can take the amazing characters that you’ve thought of and written up and bring them to life!
