Tips for Designing a Valentines Themed Outfit for Your OCs!
Time to force my characters into cute outfits…I mean…What? Who said that?
Ah, Valentine’s Day…a day known for showing your care for those you love, confessing your feelings for someone, the day a man was decapitated…oh, uh, that last one is a story for another time…Anyways! Valentine’s Day is also the perfect time for…a new outfit for your OCs! Before we get started, if you’re looking for writing tips for your OCs, check out one of these articles!

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get back to talking about Valentine’s outfits! Whether your characters are ready to spend the day with their significant other, go to a Valentine’s Day party, or you just want to force them into a cute outfit, it can be fun to give them a new design for the occasion. So how should you go about designing their new outfit for the lovely (pun intended) day? Let’s talk about it!
Incorporate a Valentine’s motif into your OC’s design!
One way you start with designing a Valentines outfit for your characters is by adding a Valentine’s motif to their outfit and design! You could either add a new motif alongside their normal one (if they have one!) or you could replace their normal motif with a Valentines themed one. If you need some ideas for some Valentine's motifs, you could try…
- A heart motif
- An angel wing motif
- A chocolate motif
- A rose motif
- An arrow motif
- A strawberry motif
- A letter motif
- A swirl motif
- A lace motif
- A gemstone motif
Oftentimes, motifs associated with Valentine’s Day revolve around love and gift giving. Why not use these motifs for a fun Valentine’s twist on your OC’s look? If you don’t want to entirely change their normal design, you could instead just replace small details with things like hearts or roses instead. Round shapes could be changed to have a heart shape, or patterns be replaced with swirling designs or roses!
You could also alternate between motifs, you don’t have to completely remove their normal motif for a Valentine’s look! You could only replace some details with a Valentines motif, and keep the normal motif in some areas of the design. Depending on how subtle you want the Valentine’s motif to be, you could base your decision on that as well! If you want a less-obvious look, you might opt to replace little details that might go unnoticed with a heart motif. For an obvious look, you might instead add heart details wherever you can! It’s up to you!
Another option is giving them a new color palette for the occasion. Valentine’s Day is often associated with various shades of red, pink, and sometimes white as well. If you want more ideas for color palettes in general, check out this article by my cool co-writer right here!

What Valentine’s motif would you pick for your OCs design?
Give your OC a fancy Valentine’s outfit!
Next up, clothes! You don’t necessarily have to give your OC some new clothes for Valentines Day, especially if you opt to stick with a motif and color palette change instead, but a cool new set of clothes is always a fun choice! Fancy clothing is often a popular choice; maybe your character’s heading to a Valentine’s party!
You’ll want to consider your OC’s unique style and what they’re comfortable wearing. There’s lots of different kinds of fancier clothing, so there’ll probably be something your OC might like! Some characters might prefer a dress, other characters might be more comfortable in a jumpsuit. If you need a few ideas for clothing pieces, you could try…
- A fancy suit
- A cute babydoll dress
- An ethereal mermaid-style dress
- An outfit with suspenders
- A cool blazer
- A sweater with a fun design
- A sharp vest
- An elegant jumpsuit
- A gorgeous ballgown
Of course, you’ll also want to consider your OC’s relationships! An OC might dress a little fancier than usual to impress their lover and wear something they normally wouldn’t!
With clothes, another thing you could try is incorporating an aesthetic into the design! If you want more ideas on picking aesthetics, try this article on the topic here!
Add some fun Valentine’s-themed accessories to the look!
Why not complete the Valentine’s look with some fun accessories? Whether your character likes crowns or ties, there’s plenty of accessories perfect for the occasion! You could go for something fancy, or something cutesy! If you need some ideas, you could try…
- A heart chain belt
- A rose flower crown
- A dainty heart hair ornament
- A necklace with an envelope charm
- An elegant crown
- Cutesy hair pins
- A flower pin
- A fancy tie
- A heart choker necklace
- An adorable bow
- Lace gloves
- A pair of heart-shaped glasses
- Pearl hair accessories
- Earrings that are heart-shaped
There’s plenty of fun accessories you could add. You could change the look of their current accessories to fit the Valentine’s theme too!
Do they have a signature accessory? Try incorporating a Valentines motif into it! A character with a crown could have a new heart-shaped one, or a character with a necklace might have one with Angel wings instead of its usual charm! Normal accessories could be altered to look a little more Valentine’s Day themed, and it’s an easy way to get your OC’s looking ready for the festivities!
If you need more ideas for accessories, why not take some inspiration from your own life? Maybe that chocolate box at the store had a cute design, or maybe you have a favorite Valentine’s day decoration that would make a great accessory for your OC! A fancy suit with a heart tie? A dress with a sweetheart neckline? Hmmm…
Pick a nice hairstyle to give your OC for the occasion!
Is it time to give your OC a new hairdo for the day? Dressing up often comes with a fun hairstyle too! A character might curl or straighten their hair, or they might try something fancier to compliment their outfit.
If you want to really add to the lovely Valentine’s day look, you could utilize shape language in the hairstyle you choose as well. You could use loose hair strands to create heart shapes, or the hairstyle itself could be heart shaped! If you need an example, think of the character Romance from K-Pop Demon Hunters. Fitting for his name, his hair is styled to look like a heart! A heart shape could be incorporated into several different aspects of a hairstyle. If you need a few ideas for hairstyles, you could consider…
- A neat bun
- Bangs curled to have a heart shape
- Pigtails twirled to have a heart shape
- A waterfall hairstyle
- An elegant mid-part style
- A fun half-up hairstyle
- A pretty braided bun
- A fancy bubble braid
- A sleek ponytail
There’s all kinds of fun looks you could give your OC to get them into the Valentine’s spirit. It can be fun to try a new hairstyle on your OC…especially for events like Valentine’s Day! Try playing around with different styles and shapes to see what you like!

Add some extra details to the Valentine’s fit!
One last thing you can experiment with for your OC’s Valentine’s look is...some extra details! Whether your OC is human or not, there’s lots of little fun details you could incorporate into their design. If your character is human, they might have face paint, hair dye, or a fun makeup look!
If your OC isn’t human, you could change up their non-human features for the occasion! Tails or antennae could have hearts at the end, or a character’s animal ears could be changed to a Valentine’s day color! You could also experiment with stickers, or temporary tattoos on your OC’s design! If you need some inspiration, why not try…
- Angel wings
- Antennae curved to look like a heart
- heart -shaped wings
- A tail with a heart at the end
- Horns curved to look like a heart shape
- Antlers with flowers on them
- A heart-shaped halo
- Glittery heart stickers on wings
- Floral tattoos
- Heart face paint
- Pink or red makeup
Some extra details are not only fun to add, but they can bring together the rest of the Valentine’s look and make it look even more festive! You could add as many, or as few as you want!
If you decide to go with a new makeup look for your OCs and need some ideas, there’s an article on the topic here!

Hearts and…well…uh…more hearts! With a side of hearts. Maybe add a heart or two as well.
